NFL News Updates : Pats Redzone “D” helps score tickets to Arizona |

|
Last weekend in the Patriots AFC Championship game against the Chargers, the defense stepped up big in the redzone holding the Chargers to 4 field goals in 4 redzone attempts to help propel the Pats to 21-12 victory. In recent Championship years the Patriots have always excelled in this department. o, why it is that this performance was so special. Was first of all, all year long the Pats have been at the bottom of the league in terms of redzone defense. They started to improve down the stretch, but the last game of the season against the Giants was a step backwards when they allowed 35 points to a struggling Giants teams that was backing into the playoffs. One month later, we are getting ready for a Pats-Giants rematch in SuperBowl 42. Most experts could have told you New England would be here, but you would be hard pressed to find any non-Giant fans who thought this team would make it this far.

FS McGraw reunites with Herm Edwards
Free agent strong safety Jon McGraw agreed to a two-year contract with the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday. The 6-foot-3, 208-pound McGraw appeared in 16 games, starting in three, with Detroit in 2006. He had 19 tackles on defense and 17 on special teams. He spent two years with the Lions after three years with the New York Jets, who drafted him out of Kansas State in the second round of the 2002 draft. He has 12 career starts in 57 games, with three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
DT Cole re-signs with Packers
The Packers have re-signed defensive tackle Colin Cole to a one-year deal, according to his agent, Neil Cornrich. Cole played in 15 games for the Packers last season, making 53 tackles with one sack and one forced fumble. Cornrich said the Packers like the 6-foot-1, 315-pound Cole's combination of size and strength. "As his confidence has increased with playing time, he's got a great future in this league," Cornrich said. Cole is participating in the Packers' offseason workouts in Green Bay, a voluntary program encouraged by Packers coach Mike McCarthy.
Edge will share the ball in 'Zona
The East Valley Tribune reports that Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt has been in contact with RB Edgerrin James and wants him to be ready to lose some carries over the course of the season. Last year, James was worked hard, carrying the ball 337 times out of Arizona's 378 rushing attempts. "I said, 'Edgerrin, if you run 1,000 plays in the course of a season and we are 55 or 58 percent run, that is 580 plays,'" Whisenhunt said. "I said, 'Edgerrin, you are not going to carry the ball 580 times. You're not going to do it.' He (said), 'OK coach, OK. But you got to get me my carries.' He's a good back. But he's not going to get every carry."
Panthers to change line blocking
The Charlotte Observer reports that the Panthers O-line will change schemes and use a zone-blocking system in 2007. The system asks its linemen to block a particular zone, not a particular player. Such systems tend to help the smaller, shifty running backs instead of the bulky power backs. That suggests DeAngelo Williams and DeShaun Foster will do better with the Panthers behind this line. "If you're an athletic offensive line, it makes the defense honest," head coach John Fox said. "That's the key. It's about keeping the opponent off-balance and creating good matchups."

Saints re-sign WR Copper
The Saints and restricted free-agent WR Terrance Copper have agreed to a one-year contract. Copper should continue to serve as a situational receiver, with potential to move up into a role in the slot. Copper dropped a bunch of passes last year but established himself as a deep threat for the Saints. His best catch of 2006 was a 48-yard hail mary reception against Atlanta.
Lions let go of DT Bryant
The Lions have released DT Anthony Bryant. His roster space was filled by veteran guard Zach Piller.
Steelers re-sign CB Carter
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that the Steelers and CB Tyrone Carter have agreed to terms. Carter will provide depth at cornerback for the Steelers.
Giants considering LB Mitchell
The New York Daily News reports that free-agent LB Kawika Mitchell, 27, has drawn the interest of the New York Giants. Last year, Mitchell had 104 total tackles (82 solo) with 1.5 sacks, an interception and a pass defensed.
